Serpina, Anna Moffo, soprano Uberto, Paolo Montarsolo, bass Giancarlo Cobelli, mute (mime). Anna Moffo, the renowned Metropolitan Opera star, is at her most charming, and in brilliant voice in this historic 1958 film of Pergolesi's masterpiece "La Serva Padrona," the originator of the comic opera (opera buffa) style. Typical of the comedy of the period, the plot revolves around a role reversal: the bossy servant becomes the mistress, while the master, an eccentric bachelor, is at her service.

La serva padrona (The Servant Turned Mistress) is an opera buffa by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710 - 1736) to a libretto by Gennaro Antonio Federico, after the play by Jacopo Angello Nelli. The opera is only 45 minutes long and was originally performed as an intermezzo between the acts of a larger serious opera. The same libretto was set by Giovanni Paisiello in 1781, a production of which has been released on DVD. La serva padrona was originally an intermezzo to Pergolesi's opera seria, Il prigionier superbo (The Proud Prisoner)
