In Concert is a live album by Janis Joplin. It was released in 1972, after Joplin's death, as a double-LP record. The first record contains performances with Big Brother and the Holding Company and the second with the Full Tilt Boogie Band, recorded at various locations in 1968 and 1970. Janis Joplin – vocals with: Big Brother and the Holding Company (Side A and B). James Gurley – guitar. Full Tilt Boogie Band (Side C and D). John Till – guitar.
When Janis Joplin failed to show up at Sunset Sound Studios by 6 . Paul Rothschild, her producer, gave in to the strange flashing he had been feeling all day and sent John Cooke, a road manager for the Full Tilt Boogie Band, over to the Landmark Motor Hotel to see why she wasn’t answering her phone. The Landmark is a big stucco building on Franklin Avenue. It is convenient to the sound studios on Sunset Blvd. and near the offices of the record companies and music publishers. Janis and contemporary music shot out of Monterey together in 1967 and I was fortunate to be there. I will always be personally grateful to her as she more than anyone else at Monterey made me intensely aware and excited about the new and future direction of music.

Drawing inspiration from Bessie Smith and Odetta, Janis Joplin developed a brash, uncompromising vocal style quite unlike traditional folk Madonnas. In 1966, Joplin was invited to the Bay Area to front Big Brother & the Holding Company. Cheap Thrills, a joyous celebration of true psychedelic soul, contained two Joplin "standards" in "Piece of My Heart" and "Ball and Chain," but she left the group in November 1968.
Janis Joplin was known for her iconic blues voice, full of rasp and spunk. The late artist helped trasform rock music in the sixties with her wildly popular posthumous album, "Pearl. TIME magazine named Joplin the most "powerful singer to emerge from the white rock movement" of all-time. The life and career of Janis Joplin.
Janis Joplin sang of her pain, just like Aretha Franklin. That's soul!! When you can take your feelings put them to music and make people feel your pain too. You can't compare Janis Joplin or Aretha Franklin to anybody else. Janis Joplin is to Bessie Smith, Big Mama Thortnton and Aretha Franklin as Sam Hung is to Ricky Martin. And, no. She was by no stretch of the imagination a "soul" singer. Not that much Janis here, but the album has always been to me a very nice collection of catchy pop ditties. Nothing mind-blowing like Summertime or Ball And Chain, but the songs are very memorable (no one can’t deny that). Bye Bye Baby and Down On Me are amazing soul numbers (both serve as a great showcase of Joplin’s rich voice), that’s for sure, but I love Call On Me (my favourite song on BBATHC, in fact) even more.
