When Mike Oldfield announced that a new album was coming, we were obviously all really psyched. When we learned it was called Return To Ommadawn, the emotions were probably mixed. To attempt to take on his greatest achievement and somehow make it better requires balls, real balls, when you're as accomplished as mr. Oldfield. Expectations were high, and I think most people thought that he couldn't possibly get anywhere near anything worthy of the Ommadawn name. Those people were sorely mistaken. This album is nothing short of a masterpiece.

Return To Ommadawn is a music studio album recording by MIKE OLDFIELD (Crossover Prog/Progressive Rock) released in 2017 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. I have been waiting for this album for so long, only two listens in but its a real return to form for Mike Oldfield. Two long pieces wholly played by Mike and a return to primarily acoustic instruments. Lots of pastoral and Celtic feel. There are occasional references back to the previous masterpiece, Ommadawn, but this is essentially a completely new work in the style on the classic Hergest Ridge to Incantations period.

Mike Oldfield’s two latest albums have been exemplars of his formats of choice. Man on the Rocks was a thoroughly enjoyable pop album, with standard-length songs that were catchy enough for top-40 radio. Return to Ommadawn with two 20-odd minute length sides, stands as one of Oldfield’s best instrumental new-age albums, rivalling Tubular Bells and even Ommadawn. 6 people found this helpful.

Album: Return To Ommadawn. Artist: Mike Oldfield. Returning to Ommadawn (1975), his third acoustic album, for inspiration, Mike Oldfield takes that beloved long-playing format that he made his own to create this latest acoustic album of two suites. Unsurprisingly playing every instrument himself, he still picks a mean melody line, with what feels like a very natural harking back to the original for inspiration. Oldfield opts mostly for a spacious, dream-like sound, and his guitar playing is the star of both suites

A true solo effort, Oldfield plays every instrument on the record, which is divided into "Part I" and "Part II," each lasting about 20 minutes in a nod to the original's vinyl format.

Mike Oldfield’s third album, 1975’s Ommadawn, was recorded in the wake of his mother’s death. He was, in his own words, barely communicating with my father, and was struggling with. the stresses – manifesting as panic attacks – induced by the colossal success of his 1973 debut album Tubular Bells. Forty years on, and latest work Return To Ommadawn was made in similarly turbulent circumstances. He had barely recovered from the all-time career high that was performing at the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in London when his father passed away.
