Rudolf Serkin, one of the most revered pianists of his time and a founder of the Marlboro Festival, the summer music series in Vermont, died on Wednesday night at his Vermont home after a long illness. He was 88 years old. He died of cancer, his wife, Irene, said. Mr. Serkin frequently had to cancel performances in recent seasons. His last appearance in New York was a Carnegie Hall recital on April 9, 1987, but in 1988 he played Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto with both the Chicago and Cleveland orchestras
