Throughout history, Nearer My God to Thee have become infamous last words. The traditional Christian hymn retells Jacob’s dream of a ladder reaching all the way to heaven, but it’s gotten a reputation for inserting itself into parables of tragic ambition. The Battle of Gettysburg culminated with a disastrous infantry assault by the Confederacy, and its band played the hymn as surviving troops retreated from Pickett's Charge. Foxing knew exactly what they were getting into by interpolating Nearer My God to Thee as the title of their third album, which was already tempting fate-there are few things that indie rock artists are less willing to publicly admit than the desire to make a classic album, but this is exactly the challenge producer Chris Walla placed before them and the. one they go to every possible length to meet.

Nearer My God is the third record by an th-rock band from St. Louis, Missouri Foxing, released on August 10, 2018 via Triple Crown Records. The album which follows up 2015’s Dealer was produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists) and Foxing’s Eric Hudson, with help from Joe Reinhart (Hop Along, Modern Baseball). Nearer My God is the third studio album by American rock band, Foxing. The album was released on August 10, 2018 through Triple Crown Records. On June 18, 2018 the album was announced, which coincided with the release of the first single off the album, "Slapstick". On July 19, 2018, the title track and second single was released. Ian Cohen, writing for Pitchfork, praised the synths in the track, saying that it could "go moonshot for moonshot with M83 and The 1975".

Nearer My God tears down almost everything that came before it, creating something new and beautiful. I want it all, starts the title track, a sentiment crystal clear over the album’s roughly hour-long runtime. Foxing brought in Chris Walla (of Death Cab for Cutie fame) and attempted to make a classic album.
