Allan Browne, who two years ago had a double lung transplant, won the Classic Jazz Album award for his career retrospective Collected Works. Veteran Judy Jacques triumphed in the Best Vocal Album category for Making Wings. Melbourne's Bennetts Lane carried off the Best Venue award. Andrea Keller won Best Contemporary Jazz album for her CD, Mikrokosmos. The Australian Art Orchestra was named Ensemble of the Year, and pianist Aron Ottignon the Best Young Artist. Tomasz Stanko's Soul of Things was named Best International Album. He later played and recorded with Nevillle Stribling in Lazy Ade's Late Hour Boys and Adelaide composer Dave Dallwitz. In the 1960s, Monsbourgh helped established the Red Onion Jazz Band. Monsbourgh, who lives in Nathalia, northern Victoria, has been in hospital and was too ill to attend the awards.
