Many of the songs on the album contain political references, either broad or specific, while the title song refers both to Cash's tendency to wear black at live shows and to the tumultuous times in which the song was created, implying the Vietnam War. The album's name also eventually became Cash's informal nickname, given to him by the public.
Although this album features a photo of the Man in Black alone on the cover, Johnny Cash doesn't actually appear on half of The International Johnny Cash. Instead, the listener is treated to a disc of German translations of Cash's greatest hits performed by Gunter Gabriel, Jürgen Herbst, Ralf Bendix, and others. The other half of this compilation consists of Cash himself performing "Five Feet High and Rising," "Ring of Fire," and "I Got Stripes" in German.

Produced by Johnny Cash. I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down Living in the hopeless, hungry side of town I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime But is there because he's a victim of the times. I wear it for the sick and lonely old For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold I wear the black in mourning for the lives that could have been. Each week we lose a hundred fine young men And, I wear it for the thousands who have died Believing that the Lord was on their side I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died Believing that we all were on their side.
