Martin & Eliza Carthy - The Moral Of The Elephant mp3 album
At very least, however, The Moral Of The Elephant addresses an imbalance and time will tell whether it will meet with the same level of success. Musically it’s a match, but in contrast to Gift that featured some notable guests, including Martin along with other family members Marry Waterson and Oliver Knight, the settings are kept simple. Perhaps that reflects Martin’s preferred format, which goes back to that debut album almost 50 years ago and the guitar/fiddle partnership he developed with Dave Swarbrick. Martin & Eliza Carthy and amongst them is The Queen Of Hearts, which featured on Martin’s debut all of those years ago. He reveals that the version that he sang then had been modified by the American singer Cynthia Gooding from whom he learnt it.
Eliza Carthy, MBE (born 23 August 1975) is an English folk musician known for both singing and playing fiddle. She is the daughter of English folk musicians singer/guitarist Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson. Carthy was born in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. She went to school at Fyling Hall School in North Yorkshire. At the age of thirteen Carthy formed the Waterdaughters with her mother, aunt (Lal Waterson) and cousin Marry Waterson.
Eliza and Martin create something fresh, yet recognizable as the product of two lives bonded by family ties and the music that lives with them and through them. The songs range from the reworking of the traditional (Her Servant Man) through interpretations of the more modern (Happiness and Monkey Hair) to a new Eliza Carthy tune set to the poetry of John Godfrey Saxe (The Elephant). Perhaps most affecting is the tribute to Mike Waterson, in using his arrangement of Died For Love to close a beautifully played and beautifully sung collection of songs. Martin Carthy and his daughter Eliza team up here as a duo for the first time, though they were both members of Waterson Carthy. All the songs were well-rehearsed and recorded as if live, without what is now thought customary mixing and overdubbing.
With singer/fiddler Eliza Carthy already two decades into her own career, it's a bit of a wonder how she and her folk legend father Martin Carthy managed to avoid making a record together as a father/daughter duo. Sure, there have been numerous family collaborations under the Waterson:Carthy banner alongside Martin and mother Norma Waterson, but 2014's The Moral of the Elephant carries its own unique charms
Twenty years ago, the then teenage Eliza Carthy joined her celebrated parents Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson on the first Waterson: Carthy album. Since then, she has recorded the classic LP Gift with her mum, and now comes the debut set with her dad. The result is brave, and anything but predictable. No other musicians are involved, as the duo match their solo and harmony singing against fine, sparse guitar work from Martin and his daughter's fiddle-playing. They work together with an ease and delight that's at times reminiscent of Martin's work with Dave Swarbrick, switching.
Martin Carthy and Eliza Carthy completed work on The Moral of the Elephant, their first duo album, this week. Recording began on 7 January at Ollie Knight’s Robin Hood’s Bay studio and was completed on 16 January, with final mixing taking place the following day. Topic Records will release the album on Monday 2 June under catalogue number TSCD587.
Release Date: Jun 17, 2014. Summary: The debut release for the British folk father-daughter duo of Martin & Eliza Carthy was produced by Oliver Knight.
