Bridges to Babylon is the 21st British and 23rd American studio album by British rock band the Rolling Stones, released by Virgin Records on 29 September 1997. The Rolling Stones released 'Bridges to Babylon' on Sept. Fans were less enthusiastic, as the album became the Rolling Stones' first ever – including 1986's lightly regarded Dirty Work – to finish outside the . Top 5. Bridges to Babylon ended up selling a million copies, but that was far less than the multi-platinum sales of their two most recent studio projects. You could hardly blame Keith Richards. Favoring an abandoned back-to-basics approach, he ended up contributing some of his strongest material, and simply stayed well away from the more modernized stuff.

But the real key to the success of Bridges to Babylon is the solid, craftsmanlike songwriting. While there aren't any stunners on the album, nothing is bad, with rockers like "Flip the Switch" and "Low Down" sounding as convincing as ballads like "Already Over M. And, as always, Keith contributes three winners - including the reggae workout "You Don't Have to Mean It" and the slow-burning "How Can I Stop" - that cap off another fine latter-day Stones record.

The Rolling Stones' studio albums take a great deal of planning. Each effort is an attempt at tapping into their eternal riffs and then adjusting the balance towards modern production concerns. Voodoo Lounge was tight and concise (for a 15-track album). Bridges to Babylon is their attempt to update their sound. The core, however, remains strong. Anybody Seen My Baby? is structured around a flawless hook (subliminally pinched from .
