A touch less intense than contemporaneous blowin’ sessions (like, uh, A Blowin’ Session ), the aptly named Blowing in From Chicago showcases both the fluid phrasing of its constituent soloists and the deep, almost unfathomably tight rhythmic pocket generated by bassist Curly Russell, pianist Horace Silver, and ever-propulsive drummer Art Blakey. The perfectly curated tunes on Blowing in From Chicago only further this magical effect. Each of the six songs on display possesses an uncannily satisfying sense of continuity, as if they could go on forever without a loss of force or interest.

Blowing in from Chicago. Clifford Jordan's first date as a leader actually found him sharing a heated jam session with fellow tenor John Gilmore. Backed by pianist Horace Silver, bassist Curly Russell, and drummer Art Blakey, the two saxophonists square off mostly on obscurities (other than Gigi Gryce's "Blue Lights" and "Billie's Bounce"). This was one of Gilmore's few sessions outside of Sun Ra's orbit and, if anything, he slightly overshadows the cooler-toned Jordan.
