Under Herbert von Karajan the Berliner Philharmoniker developed their very own performance culture, characterised by a beauty of sound, enchanting legati, virtuosity and perfection. He preferred to concentrate on the classical-romantic repertoire: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Strauss. In addition, he devoted himself to the Second Viennese School and leading composers of the early 20th century like Ravel, Stravinsky and Debussy, taking occasional excursions into the contemporary era with works by Messiaen and Henze, even Penderecki. The Herbert von Karajan Conducting Competition, first held in 1969, was springboard to an international career for young conductors like Mariss Jansons and Valery Gergiev. Karajan promoted promising talents even beyond that, including Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa and the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

I have written before about the special distinction of Karajan's recordings of the Schumann symphonies (which are unsurpassed in the present catalogue) when discussing the coupling of the Rhenish with Mendelssohn's Reformation Symphony in April. The Spring is no exception: it is as fresh as it should be, beautifully paced, and the playing of the Berlin Philharmonic is magnificent. 8 - "Spring" : 1. Andante un poco maestoso - Allegro molto vivace 10:44 2. 8 - "Spring" : 2. Larghetto 06:17 3. 8 - "Spring" : 3. Scherzo (Molto vivace) 05:53 4. 8 - "Spring" : 4. Allegro animato.

Herbert von Karajan recorded almost everything in the standard orchestral repertoire once, many works two or three times, between his 1950s recordings for EMI with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the early 1960s for Decca with the Vienna Philharmonic, and his 1960s - 1989 recordings, mostly with the Berlin Philharmonic, for Deutsche Grammophon. In this collection of Tchaikovsky's 6 Symphonies, Karajan's only recordings of Symphonies 1, 2 and 3 are represented, dating from 1979 at the end of the analog era of recording technology, just before digital recordings became the norm.

Herbert von Karajan was among the most famous conductors of all time - a man whose talent and autocratic bearing lifted him to a position of unprecedented dominance in European musical circles. He was born on April 5, 1908 in Salzburg, Austria, to a cultured Austrian family of Greek descent (their original name was Karajannis). His musical training began at the Mozarteum Conservatory in Salzburg where he studied piano with Franz Ledwenke, theory with Franz Zauer, and composition with Bernhard Paumgartner, who encouraged Karajan to pursue conducting.
