Mansun were a welcome relief from much of what had gone before in the so-called indie scene of the 90’s. Indie was no longer terminology that related to bands being on an independent label, rather was used to cover anything that was considered a bit alternative or outwith the norm or standards of pop music. The 90’s saw the birth of new scenes – Britpop & Baggy where the success of bands like Blur and Oasis, Happy Mondays and Stone Roses spawned thousands of turgid copyists and ‘lad’ bands. In the same vein as prog, the album could be described as a concept album telling the sordid tales of life in a bizarre small town as observed by the Grey Lantern of the title. The album title came from Drapers alter-ego stage character, created to overcome his often crippling anxiety and shyness.

However, the album is now sat upon a cabinet of 90s albums forgotten with time which is a shame. This is probably due to releases such as OK Computer being so hugely acclaimed; Mansun struggled to stay in the limelight even despite making an album as original and adventurous as the previously mentioned. Who knows what albums we could have seen created from inspiration if this album was bigger, Attack is as inspired as an album can get and I’d be surprised if it failed to move artists.

Mansun-whose records regularly go Top 10 in the UK, whose tours sell out effortlessly, but whose lead singer most people would be hard-pressed to name-are impossible to figure out; one gets the impression they prefer things that wa. It's this blatant disregard for indie credibility that allowed Mansun to make such an ambitious, astonishingly opulent debut album. Attack Of The Grey Lantern creates a lucid musical narcosis, a waking dream, all multi-layered guitars and spooky samples: the mewing of drowning cats, the tolling of submerged church bells, WW2 air raid sirens (smoothed and airbrushed to sound like whalesong), ghostly operatic tenors, oceanic strings, and the Fahrenheit 451 crackle of burning paper (money? books? bibles?). It's almost-whisper it-a CONCEPT album.
