Yellow Ostrich was an American indie rock band based in Brooklyn, New York. The band formed in 2009 and, at the time of their last show, consisted of Alex Schaaf (vocals and guitar), Michael Tapper (drums), Jared Van Fleet and Zach Rose. The band formed in 2009 and consisted of Alex Schaaf (vocals and guitar), Michael Tapper (drums), and Jon Natchez (bass, horns, lapsteel, keyboard, and electronics).
Yellow Ostrich's 2011 sophomore effort Mistress is a reflective and melodic mix of indie rock, harmonized folk-rock, and some lo-fi rock. In that sense, the mix of vocal harmonies and echoey guitar sections fits nicely, if somewhat generically so, next to such similarly inclined acts as Fleet Foxes and Local Natives. To these ends, tracks like the bluesy "Hate Me Soon" and the driving "Hold On" are catchy, post-punk inflected moments

A while back, Yellow Ostrich was featured in an Indie Sabbath post and it included the track "Whale". The words of Nheuyingh describes the band pretty accurately: "an a capella group got together to make an indie-rock influenced album, fuses incredible vocal harmonies with minimal instrumentation, into a complex, layered and undeniably catchy tune. This marvelous album is entitled The Mistress through Barsuk Records
On the contrary, as in the case of Yellow Ostrich’s self-titled, I’m actually a big fan. My beef was with the internet’s part to play. Sure, the advantages of such an age are hard to overstate, but the consequences are equally lofty.
Yellow Ostrich-The Mistress is one of the most creative and addictive albums of 2011. The group avoids Bobby McFerrin-esque novelty by combining those loops with inspired melodies and instrumentation, and avoid Medulla-esque impenetrability by, well, not being Bjork. The result is some truly adventurous music. The percussion on "Whale" out hip-hops nearly every conventional hip-hop beat produced this year
