Ernestine Anderson (November 11, 1928 – March 10, 2016) was an American jazz and blues singer. In a career spanning more than six decades, she recorded over 30 albums. She was nominated four times for a Grammy Award. She sang at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival (six times over a 33-year span), as well as at jazz festivals all over the world. In the early 1990s she joined Qwest Records, the label of fellow Garfield High School grad Quincy Jones.

No doubt because of her bluesy signature tune, "Never Make Your Move Too Soon," vocalist Ernestine Anderson has been typecast as a home-fried, worldy-wise vampster, and there's no question that this Houston-born songbird can get down with the best of them. But Anderson always has strived for sophisticated elegance, as well, her initial inspiration being Sarah Vaughan.

I bought "Ballad Essentials" because of a couple of Anderson productions I already owned ("Running Wild", and "A Perfect Match" which co-starred George Shearing) Two observations: 1. Early Ernestine ("Running Wild") is better than later Ernestine. 2. "Ballad Essentials" is an anthology of earlier offerings, three of which appeared in "A Perfect Match". That said, this under recognized talent is still very good. Ernestine Anderson began her singing career in 1943 with Russell Jacquet and performed with Lionel Hampton, George Shearing, Hank Jones, Gene Harris, Ray Brown and other jazz giants, but she's not as well-known or widely heard as she should be. This Concord Ballad Essentials strives to right that wrong, and the result is excellent.

Ballad Essentials is an album by Susannah McCorkle, released in 2002. Compilation album by. Susannah McCorkle. For fans, the album gathers a dozen similarly toned pieces, or an hour's worth of music, in one place.

ERNESTINE ANDERSON is a vocal jazz music artist. Ernestine Anderson was born in Houston, Texas, on November 11, 1928, into a musical family, and she grew up listening to the blues. As a child she joined her father and grandmother singing gospel in the local church. At the age of twelve she joined trumpeter Russel Jacquet to sing in his big band.
