The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (also known as The Pickwick Papers) was Charles Dickens's first novel. He was asked to contribute to the project as an up-and-coming writer following the success of Sketches by Boz, published in 1836 (most of Dickens' novels were issued in shilling instalments before being published as complete volumes).

The Pickwick Papers was the first novel by Charles Dickens. He worked a serious subject into the comedic novel, that of the injustice of the justice system. The publishing firm of Chapman and Hall faced a huge decision in April of 1836. The firm had just started a series of amusing stories dealing with Cockney sporting scenes. The series was built around the illustrations of Robert Seymour. Publication began on March 30th and on April 20th Seymour committed suicide.
