AFI will always have a special place in my life. I may be in the minority but I found Sing The Sorrow to be a work of art, cutting small bits and pieces from early-era AFI and sprinkling them over a more radio-friendly, mainstream hard-rock sound . AFI will always have a special place in my life. To this day, it's an album that I'll listen front to back, without skipping. Everything else that came after though, felt like a cheap imitation at some parts, and at others, like the band's side projects decided to make music under the AFI banner.
Fans were cautiously optimistic when AFI announced AFI (The Blood Album) last October, hoping for music that would reward their loyalty and solidify the band’s standing. It’s like The Killers releasing Battle Born or Fall Out Boy releasing American Beauty/American Psycho. The new material won’t tarnish hits of old, but its existence doesn’t really matter. That’s a bit harsh for AFI, the band’s 10th studio album and first with Concord Records. It’s not that the record isn’t good – it possesses potential chart-climbers and bittersweet moments that’ll make fans nostalgic for the group’s early punk days. But does AFI have the frenetic energy of their debut, Answer That and Stay Fashionable, or the visceral emotion of Black Sails in the Sunset? No.

Time flies! It's hard to believe that AFI are now ten albums into their music career. At a point where you typically start to see some sag in the quality of what most veteran bands put out, AFI continue to thrive and appear to be on an uptick in their career. The band's latest is a self-titled release with the subtitle The Blood Album, and it's appropriate as you can feel the blood, sweat and tears all over this new collection as they take you on a journey, working in elements of punk, darkwave and straight-forward rock into a solid top-to-bottom listen.
