Now, with all that explaining out of the way, the very high caliber of songwriting on display here makes it immediately clear that Iommi and Hughes had little difficulty in rekindling the fires of their original collaboration. Iommi's 2001 solo album) to go with the far superior sound quality. Once again, it may wind up overlooked, but most experts will agree that this is a historic and highly recommended release for serious metalheads. Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music.
Overall, The 1996 Dep Sessions is an eclectic bunch of songs that have no business being on the same album as one another, but this is rock n' roll and breaking the rules is the name of the game. It makes for an entertaining listen every now and then, but is held back by some production inadequacies. Reuniting with Glenn Hughes, the singer from his last ‘solo’ album Seventh Star, Iommi records the 1996 DEP sessions. It sounds exactly like a 90’s rock/metal album and sounds very little like a Sabbath album, yet somehow it’s really quite good, something that can’t be said about the proper Iommi debut a few years later. His guitar tone is weighty, but the album really isn’t, as the riffs aim more towards atmosphere than pure crushing density.

Finally in 2004 Sanctuary records put these recordings out and they are indeed a worthwhile release.
The album he recorded was with an old friend, Glenn Hughes, who had previously been on a psuedo-Black Sabbath album Seventh Star. Seventh Star was OK, but it didn’t feel like a Black Sabbath record – it wasn’t supposed to be, it was supposed to be Tony’s first solo album, but record company pressure forced it to be Black Sabbath. Well, 11 years after Seventh Star, Tony & Glenn got together to write some more material
