Wailing Soul / Ranking Trevor - Take We Back / Yard Oh mp3 album

The Wailing Souls (originally The Renegades) are a Jamaican reggae vocal group whose origins date back to the 1960s. The group has undergone several line-up changes over the years with Winston "Pipe" Matthews and Lloyd "Bread" McDonald the only constant members. They have been nominated for Grammy Awards three times.

DJ Ranking Trevor (1952 -2012) helped pioneer the use of toasting, the Jamaican form of rap that served as a precursor to hip-hop. He cut his first record, aged 15, before achieving success in the UK reggae charts in 1977 with "Cave Man Skank" and " Three Piece Chicken and Chips". Died in a motorcycle accident in Kingston, Jamaica in 2012.

However, they continued releasing singles, several of them self-productions, and a number were cut in collaboration with DJs, including "Take We Back," which saw them reunite with Ranking Trevor, and "Take a Taste," with Ringo. During this period, the group also released two albums, 1983's On the Rocks and the following year's Stranded. Understandably, the Wailing Souls were losing patience. They'd wasted a year recording an album that never saw release, and now their new record was unable to even find a Jamaican label willing to put it out. In truth, the hits were drying up, although the group's work remained as strong as ever, the vocals as heartfelt, and harmonies as exquisite as they'd always been. The pair stayed on board for 2000's Equality, which returned Wailing Soul to their rootsiest roots, yet is shot through with a modern electronic sound and American stylings.

Maybe the best guideline would be that it's probably an essential disc if you have any good reason to believe this specialized take on the Wailing Souls might be, but not if you have your doubts.

Ranking Trevor, an influential deejay or toaster, as Jamaican patois rappers were called during his 1970s heyday, died in the Olympic Gardens area of Kingston yesterday morning, Aug 7. According to reports, he was returning home from a dance when a collision with a car threw him off of his motorcycle; as he lay on the ground another vehicle ran over hi. Ranking Trevor has the distinction of contributing a spiritedly toasted verse to the debut Jamaican 12'' single "Truly", a romantic pledge sweetly harmonized by The Jays. In 1978 he signed with the UK's Frontline label, a Virgin Records imprint, and released the album In Fine Style, which featured the hits "Rub a Dub Style" and "Masculine Gender". Meanwhile, Channel One continued to release well-received albums by the DJ including the humorously titled Three Piece Chicken and Chips, which pitted Ranking Trevor against Trinity.
