In May 1974, David Bowie released his eighth album, Diamond Dogs. But as proved by Who Can I Be Now? – a lavish box set that traces his career from Diamond Dogs to 1976’s masterpiece Station to Station, by way of David Live and the vastly superior Live Nassau Colosseum 1976 – the shift was more convoluted and problematic than it appeared at the time. Most attention has been drawn by the inclusion of The Gouster, a reconstruction of an early version of the album that became Young Americans.

Parlophone Records are proud to announce DAVID BOWIE WHO CAN I BE NOW? (), the second in a series of box sets spanning his career from 1969. The follow up to the awarding winning and critically acclaimed DAVID BOWIE FIVE YEARS () will be released on 23rd September and will contain the previously unreleased album from 1974 called THE GOUSTER. The twelve CD box features all of the material officially released by Bowie during the so-called American phase of his career from 1974 to 1976. The album was mixed and mastered before David decamped to New York to work with John Lennon and Harry Maslin on what became the YOUNG AMERICANS album.

Album · 2016 · 104 Songs. A lavish exploration of Bowie between Diamond Dogs and Station to Station. Who Can I Be Now? (1974 - 1976) David Bowie. Listen on Apple Music.

As with all of David Bowie’s archival releases, Who Can I Be Now? (1974/1976) is of the highest quality in terms of sound quality and packaging. Speaking of redundant, we have five LPs worth of Bowie’s middling 1974 concert album David Live. Recorded at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia during the Diamond Dogs tour, David Live is a rather listless performance that has never been highly regarded. Bowie himself said of the album that it should really have been titled David Bowie Is Alive and Well and Living Only in Theory.

Parlophone Records presents David Bowie: Who Can I Be Now (1974-1976), the second in a series of box sets spanning his career from 1969. The follow up to the awarding winning and critically acclaimed Five Years (1969-1973) will be released in September 2016 and will contain the previously unreleased album from 1974 called The Gouster. The 12 CD/13-piece vinyl sets feature all of the material officially released by Bowie during the so-called ‘American' phase of his career from 1974 to 1976. Exclusive to the box set is The Gouster previously unreleased as a complete album it was recorded at Sigma Sound, Philadelphia in 1974 and produced by Tony Visconti.

Reviews about David Bowie - Who Can I Be Now? [1974-1976] (21):
My first lp from the live mix 2005 has an Elvis label on the side one.
One of Bowie's finest; dark, brooding and amazing. Sound quality excellent too.
Whats limited in this version ? I see know difference in the vinyl box re-issues made here. Can anyone explain ? And can anyone comment on their experience with the 2016 mixes compared to the original mixes in this box ? I havent bought this box mainly because I can't see any point in having several versions of the same albums.. Whats the point having 2 versions of "David Live" and "Station to Station" So if anyone can comment on this I would be thankful ;-)
There are no 'limited edition' box-sets as the box-sets themselves were marketed as 'limited edition' ie. you had a choice between the CD edition or the Vinyl edition with the latter containing the book. From my experience the 2016 reissues included here are not remixes (albeit 'David Live' and 'Station to Station 2010' use alternate mixes done in 2005 and 2010 respectively) but are 'remasters' and not very good ones at that. The sound is definitely acceptable and is somewhat an improvement here and there especially with Diamond Dogs but with Young Americans and STS the mastering is brickwalled (not just an opinion but on forums this has unfortunately been proved) which makes for a real loss of fidelity with albums mastered so well at the time where on original pressings all the nuances and detail were clear. In all I think the box-set is not worth getting and I feel it's just Parlophone cashing in regardless of whether Bowie approved these compilations before his death. Stick to buying the individual reissues especially if your originals aren't in the best shape as with credit they are authentic enough. I just wish the book would be sold separately next.
Anyone else have this mistake? My second record from David Bowie live (2005 Mix) have the same label as the second record from David Bowie live (original mix). The songs are ok, follow the cover but the label is wrong.

I have exactly the same mistake in my box !!!
Live Nassau Coliseum '76 is a great live album I had never heard. David Live is...not very good. Cocaine did a number on him during that time.
Nothing personal
Watch the documentary, Cracked Actor. He was right into his Charlie in late 74
The height of Bowie's coke addiction was during the Isolar tour (Coliseum '76) so the opinion on 'David Live' interests me in that respect.
Lahorns Gods
true, but there are much better live gigs of him that cannot be released officially due to some lawyer humdrum. Like Iggy & David live at the Mantra, live @ Santa Monica 1972, etc. But, speaking frankly I don't know any good shows from 1974...76. Am not an expect though.
Yes! They did it again! This is such a great box set! Perfectly inline with what they did with Five Years. Can't wait for the next release now..
Sorry Zuckuss, the details to this release has been known for a long time. But I agree, the should have focused more on the unreleased takes or some alternative mixes which hasn't been released yet. But I guess, they will release these things seperately to make more money. That's the f***ing music business.
And ressurection on 84th street. The thin white duke. Ressurection. Etc etc lol
Yeah, but the Nassau Album has been released before as part of the StationToStation Deluxe Boxset. So also nothing new here.
Yeah I know they were...and my first reaction was the same.It is not satisfying at all :DI guess if you don't have all these albums already it's a decent purchase but it could have been a lot betterExcept Re: Call 2, and the previous mixes they definietly will put out them. I'm looking forward Nassau Live, it's a great live album
Disappointing content I must say...exscpecially the Re:Call 2 . In my opinion this period had probably the best demos and alternative takes and none of them is included. Those double reissues are unnecesary as well. Totally waste of place just like The Gouster (2016 Remaster) which in that form never really existed, It's just a complete rip-off. I hope the next box set gonna be an improvement....
This 13 LP Boxset is Limited? To how many copies?
And look at what it's going for now !!........damn.......how many words
Silver Globol
the first 50 people who ordered from davidbowie.com got a free turntable slipmat
Five Years is no longer in production and it is not scheduled to be released again.
