Georg Philipp Telemann, Collegium Instrumentale Brugense, Capella Brugensis, Patrick Peire - Johannespassion (2xCD).
Georg Philipp Telemann. Collegium Instrumentale Brugense Patrick Peire conductor. In these eight discs, Collegium Instrumentale Brugense and Patrick Peire’s three separate volumes of Telemann Overtures have been collected together for the first time, creating a box set that is set apart by its breadth. Its overview of 33 Overtures illuminates Telemann’s hugely inventive approach to instrumentation, while revealing the wealth of subjects that he sought inspiration in. The ‘Alster Overtüre’, for example, named after the Alster river in Germany, features a ‘Concert of Frogs and Crows’, while another Overture is inspired by Cervantes’ Don Quixote.

Orchestra: Collegium Instrumentale Brugense. Conductor: Patrick Peire. Composer: Georg Philipp Telemann. Audio CD (6 Nov. 2000). The Capella Brugensis (voices) and Collegium Brugense (orchestra), led by Patrick Peire, do a splendid job performing this rarely if ever heard music.
The d performance of Collegium Instrumentale Brugense under Patrick Piere shows that these bright, varied works truly rival the suites of Handel and Bach. A broad selection of 33 Overtures (Orchestral Suites) by Georg Philipp Telemann is here collected in one generous 8-CD set. Telemann, one of the most prolific and gifted composers of the 18th century, wrote many charming, graceful suites in the fashion of his time - comprised of a three-part French overture followed by shorter dance movements, chaconnes, character pieces, and more. The d performance of Collegium Instrumentale Brugense under Patrick Piere shows that these bright, varied works truly rival the suites of Handel and Bach.
Telemann, Georg Philipp. Opus/Catalogue NumberOp.
In his day, Telemann was considered to be Germany’s leading composer, the artlessness and transparency of his music setting him far above his contemporary Bach. That apart, this is a stylish and polished performance. Catherine Bott is aptly sweet-voiced for her innocent role, well contrasted against Sarah Connolly’s darker, more impassioned singing.
Georg Philipp Telemann once claimed he had written approximately 600 orchestral suites, multi-movement works consisting largely of dance movements that served double duty as instrumental pieces for concert and as overtures to operas. Led by longtime chief conductor Patrick Peire, Collegium Instrumentale Brugense plays these Telemann overtures as though they are second nature, and the recording is very clear, bright, and well divided, though a little old-fashioned sounding in the manner of an analog stereo recording, despite the Spars code identification of DDD.
