The Cathedral Church and Minor Basilica of Saint Patrick (colloquially St Patrick's Cathedral) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, and seat of its archbishop, currently Peter Comensoli. In 1974 Pope Paul VI conferred the title and dignity of minor basilica on it. In 1986 Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral and addressed clergy during his Papal Visit.
The Cathedral of Saint Patrick has two organs. The Gallery Organ is located in the Choir Gallery below the Rose Window over the Fifth Avenue entrance and in the Triforium, near the South Transept. The Chancel Organ is located in the North Ambulatory next to the Chapel of Saint Joseph. The first organ in the Cathedral had 4 manuals and 56 ranks and was built by George Jardine and Sons, one of New York's most distinguished organ builders, in 1879. The firm of George Kilgen & Son of St. Louis, Missouri was engaged to build two new instruments according to designs which were heavily influenced by the Cathedral's world renowned organist. During the building period it was determined that the Gallery would need to be extended to accommodate the new Gallery Organ. In the late 1920s, a concrete reinforced extension to the original Gallery was constructed.

There are many interesting people commemorated in Saint Patrick’s – writers, soldiers, churchmen, lawyers – people from all walks of life, famous in their day but who are now largely forgotten. The oldest monument in the building, a stone effigy in the North Choir Aisle is that of Fulk de Saundford, Archbishop of Dublin from 1256-71, the first archbishop to be buried in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. The next oldest is the stone tomb slab of Michael Tregury, who was Archbishop of Dublin from 1449-71. His memorial has had a somewhat chequered history

Unique to St Paul's Cathedral is the boys choir role of "Dean's Chorister" created by David Richardson when Dean of Melbourne. The Dean's Chorister primarily has the role of leading the choir with the "virge" or ceremonial mace, a task formerly performed by the head chorister. In 2016, the 125th anniversary of the Cathedral's consecration, the Girls' Voices of the Cathedral Choir were established, and female lay clerks were also permitted to join the choir.
