Wiley isn't a newcomer to our pages, but given that his last feature came way, way, way back in 2009, our readers Stateside may need a little refresher course. Well, we could hardly ask for a better re-entry point into his oeuvre than new promo single On a Level. Here, a frenetic synth beat by Skepta, who does double-duty as director of the accompanying visuals, sets the stage for braggadocious verses jam-packed with scorching triple-time flows. This joint is just a loosie, but fans can keep it locked for more from Wiley.

Wiley: on a level of his own. As Skepta’s directorial debut, the video is an aesthetic triumph, here are some of the potential influences: 90s Hardcore: the opening ong thing (always have an opening ong thing) reads ‘In our hearts & in our veins positive youth will always remain’, which according to the internet can only be a reference to straight-edge hardcore band Floorpunch’s song Always. A similar campaign was successful in Virginia earlier this year, and the team have already raised over £120,000 of their £150,000 goal
The track also marks Wiley’s return to Big Dada, the label that released his last grime single ‘And Again’ featuring God’s Gift as well as the 100% Publishing and Evolve Or Be Extinct albums. The label will also distribute Wiley’s Snake’s & Ladders album later this year. On A Level’ is produced by Skepta and subtly incorporates tropes of yesteryear grime whilst remaining undoubtedly futuristic. The track’s propulsive, squelchy bass line is effortlessly kept in check by a razor-sharp Wiley. The video was also directed by Skepta and features fellow Boy Better Know members as well as cameos.
