George Szell (1897-1970) was able to perform a miraculous feat when he took the Cleveland Orchestra, a ho-hum, midwestern ensemble, and transform it into a finely tuned, razor sharp symphonic machine. Music of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, Dvorak, Schumann and the like had rarely sounded so precise coming out of Ohio, let alone Vienna, Berlin, New York, etc.
For a full Brahms cycle, my current preference is Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic on Sony - a set of recordings that have heft and yet retain a good dose of humanity as we climb the mountains. In my experience, only Toscanini led the Brahms First with more tension and drive, but the closest approximation is this classic Szell performance, which has been widely admired for over four decades. plays with great power and transparency, and the refurbished sonics are twice as good as they ever were on Epic lPs when this recording first appeared.
The Cleveland Orchestra began a long-running association with the Columbia Masterworks label under conductor Artur Rodziński. Successors Erich Leinsdorf, George Szell, and Lorin Maazel all recorded for Columbia, with some early Szell records being assigned to Columbia's budget sub-label, Epic. Szell's recordings with Cleveland in particular have remained steadily in print. In the 1990s the Columbia catalogue was acquired by Sony Classics, which continues to issue the recordings. One of the great Hungarian conductors, Szell quickly transformed a middling Midwestern orchestra into one of the nation's Big Five. Part of the wave of great Hungarian conductors who took over American musical life just before and after World War II – the others included Fritz Reiner, Antal Dorati, and Eugene Ormandy – George Szell quickly transformed a middling Midwestern orchestra into one of the nation's Big Five. His cultivation of the Cleveland Orchestra set an example of discipline and hard work that gradually helped raise the standards of orchestras across America

Pianist Clifford Curzon, Conductor George Szell and the London Symphony Orchestra unite for a Truly Stunning Performance! Clifford Curzon gets to the heart of the music, capturing the high drama of the symphonic opening movement, and his rapt concentration makes a profound effect in the Adagio, famous for his controversially slow tempo.
