This CD, featuring Dizzy Gillespie playing on the soundtrack of The Winter in Lisbon (a film never properly distributed), is only of minor interest. He wrote the nine themes and Slide Hampton put together the arrangements, but, as with most soundtracks, the music sounds incomplete without the picture. Also, Gillespie's playing at this late date in his life was quite erratic.

John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (/ɡɪˈlɛspi/; October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, and singer. Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuoso style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard in jazz. His combination of musicianship, showmanship, and wit made him a leading popularizer of the new music called bebop.

Magic Summer (Piano Version), 04:58.

The Winter in Lisbon is a soundtrack album for the European film of the same name directed by José A. Zorrilla composed and performed by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in 1990 and released on the Milan label. The album represents the final studio recordings by the trumpet legend. Magic Summer" (Fishman, Gillespie) - 2:30. Magic Summer" (Fishman, Gillespie) - 4:59. Burma" (Gillespie, Pérez) - 8:08.

The star-packed concerts that were meant to launch Dizzy Gillespie's 75th birthday celebrations in January 1992 turned out to be the trumpeter's last performances - represented by three discs on Telarc, with an ailing Gillespie sounding out of sorts but the atmosphere of the occasion and buzz of the music carrying the show. The biggest Gillespie recorded highlight prior to that was 1989's vivid duet with another genius of the bop movement, Max Roach  . Instead, it's a full-on jazz album, with Gillespie fronting a fine band that includes pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist George Mraz and drummer Grady Tate.
