Ginger is the debut studio album by Dutch electronic music producer Speedy J (Jochem Paap). Released via a joint deal between Plus 8 and Warp in September 1993, the album was the sixth release in Warp's Artificial Intelligence series, which focused on "electronic listening music" by different artists. It peaked at number 68 on the UK Albums Chart and remains Speedy J's most successful album there.

This first album, released on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva's Plus 8 record label, finds Paap at roughly the same point on the growth curve that the Beatles were during Rubber Soul
Although remixes would turn cuts like "Pepper," with its weightless ambient sweeps, into trancing dancefloor jams, Paap's clear purpose on Ginger was to take his music out of the rave and into the home-listening environment. And not until the decade-later hard techno of Loudboxer would Paap return to his dancefloor roots, similar to the Beatles' return to rock captured in the Let It Be sessions.
First of all, I would like to echo all the positive things said about this album. It is a masterpiece of early Ambient Techno/IDM. There isn't a bad track on here to my ears. If you find yourself liking any of the other early Warp/AI stuff, you will undoubtedly enjoy this. It's very minimal, but done at the highest level.

Together with Laurent Garnier, Aphex Twin and Richie Hawtin, Rotterdam’s Speedy J helped define Techno since 1991 with albums like Ginger, G Spot, Public Energy No. 1 and Loudboxer – spearheading labels like Plus 8, Novamute and Warp Speedy J's biography. It's a concept album with a sci-fi backstory about a post-apocalyptic Glasgow ruled by a German conglomerate. Justin Broadrick announces new JK Flesh album for Electric Deluxe, New Horizon. Due out in August, it's the second JK Flesh LP for Speedy J's label.
