Hailing from the small South Australian town of Mount Gambier, Graney moved to Melbourne in the late 1970s and formed his first band the Moodists, featuring Graney's wife Clare Moore and future Dirty Three guitarist Mick Turner. Stylistically, the Moodists were influenced by other alternative Australian bands of the time, including the Birthday Party, although they were more influenced by American rock such as Iggy Pop and the Velvet Underground than the English punk and gothic scene. Upon his return to Australia, Graney formed the White Buffaloes. In 1990, they released an album entitled My Life on the Plains.
Buffalo (or buffaloes) may refer to: Bubalina, a subtribe of the tribe Bovini within the subfamily Bovinae. African buffalo or Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer). Bubalus, a genus of bovines including various water buffalo species. Wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee). Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).
In 2007 Graney and Moore joined with guitarist, Perera, pianist, Fitzgibbon and bass player, Thomas to form The Lurid Yellow Mist featuring Dave Graney and Clare Moore (or as Dave Graney and the Lurid Yellow Mist). The name of the band, according to Moore, was based on the strange miasmic cloud that the man in the 1957 science fiction film, The Incredible Shrinking Man drove his speedboat through just before he started his transformation. Described by Graney as an "electro boogie" album.
