Empath Album Artwork. Second single Evermore follows with Devin‘s characteristic mashing of various genres into one cohesive whole: what begins as a deceptively simple hard rock riff in an elementary 1-2 pattern is soon floating uneasily over asymmetric meters before ceding entirely to Devin‘s gentle lilt over his docile acoustic strumming, which then are cut off by a ballroom-worthy waltz that then. morphs into the heavy weirdness we expect from Devin. Anneke van Giersbergen, Che Aimee Dorval, Chad Kroeger, Reyne Townsend, Josefa Torres, Ron Getgood, Elliot Desgagnés, Elektra Women’s Choir, additional vocals. Empath Track-listing: Castaway.

There, I came out and said it. Not necessarily because they're difficult to pin down the reasons you like or dislike them, but because there's something about Devin's music that defies any attempt to try to write objective, logical words about it. I can spout all the "wall of sound", "Enya-meets-Slayer", "prog-metal" epithets I want, but nothing I write is ever going to adequately describe the feeling of sitting down with a Devin Townsend album for the first time
Devin Townsend is an artist that has always been hard to classify. Releasing such a wide range of music, from death metal, to ambient, to new age, to progressive rock, to country. But to be confined to just one genre wouldn’t be Devin Townsend Empath starts off with Castaway and Genesis, which serve as an e for the album. Genesis was the first single to be released, with the accompanying video being an amusing look into Devin’s mind as he listens to the song along with us, and crazy visuals appear behind him to the music. This song seemed to be pretty polarizing among some Devin Townsend fans, as it is really not a song in the traditional sense, and is such a mashup of genres that it can be hard to digest for some.

Why would Devin Townsend, the album, be any different¿ Empath changes moods and styles on a dime or whatever the Canadian equivalent of a dime is. It is rife with spoken word sections and animal noises. It eschews traditional rock/metal song structure almost completely. It spends significant periods eschewing traditional rock/metal instruments almost completely as well. There’s really no easy way to evaluate Empath. Townsend is, at the best of times, a divisive artist and Empath features and amplifies his every unfettered, divisive impulse to a ludicrous degree. It’s not the kind of album you can walk away from and forget having listened to. It’s bound to draw a reaction, be it love, hate, or just bafflement. Perhaps in twenty years Empath will stand out as an artistic landmark of singular importance. Or perhaps it will signify a dead-end in an otherwise glittering career.
