Harrison took Henry Cowell's "Music of the Peoples of the World" course, and also studied counterpoint and composition with him. In 1941, he went to the University of California at Los Angeles to work at the dance department as a dancer and accompanist. While there, he took lessons from Arnold Schoenberg which led to an interest in Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique. The pieces he was writing at this time, however, were largely percussive works using unconventional materials, such as car brake drums, as musical instruments. On November 2, 1990, the Brooklyn Philharmonic premiered Harrison's fourth symphony, which he titled Last Symphony. He combined Native American music, ancient music, and Asian music, tying it all together with lush orchestral writing. At the Tomb of Charles Ives (1963), chamber orchestra. Concerto for Flute & Percussion (1939).

Lukas Foss, who has died aged 86, was at the forefront of the American musical avant garde of the 1960s and 70s. Composer, conductor, pianist, sometime academic and proselytiser, he had a fascination with and facility for music of virtually every kind, which with his lifelong, hyperactive quest for some of its most extreme possibilities led him into much controversy. In 1963 Foss was offered the conductorship of the Buffalo Philharmonic, New York state, the first time he had had his own orchestra, and he embarked upon a wildly ambitious programme, set up a centre for creative arts and promoted several contemporary music festivals in the city. At the end of last year the Boston Modern Orchestra Project released the first new recording of The Prairie since Foss’s own version with the Brooklyn Philharmonic in the 1970s. He is survived by his wife Cornelia, a son and daughter, and a brother.

In honor of the Lou Harrison Centennial, Naxos has just released a CD of three of Harrison's great pieces: the Violin Concerto (aka Concerto for the Violin with Percussion Orchestra), Grand Duo, and Double Music (with John Cage). For Double Concerto, which premiered at the California Club, Harrison and Cage agreed on a specified number of rhythmic figures and/or rests of the same quantity, and shaped the full length of the piece in half notes. They wrote their sections separately-Cage composed parts 1 and 3 (soprano and tenor) and Harrison 2 and 4 (alto and bass)-and then put them together.
