Bertrand from Paris, France"What's Up?" seemingly appeared out of nowhere becoming a neo-folkie, hippie hit first on modern rock radio stations and then crossing over to pop. Although it only reached on the pop chart, it has been a fixture on pop radio stations ever since. The group 4 Non Blondes never duplicated the success of this hit, but lead vocalist Linda Perry has become a successful songwriter and producer, particularly in work with Pink.

1992 – What’s Up? Debuts as a Rock Hit from an All-Lesbian Band. Naturally, the song was already kind of queer from its initial creation abecause 4 Non Blondes was an all-lesbian band. The song appeared on their first album Bigger, Better, Faster, More! And even though most people refer to the song as What’s Going On?, the band deliberately titled it What’s Up? to avoid being confused with Marvin Gaye’s 1971 song What’s Going On. Lady Gaga also covered 4 Non Blondes’ ‘What’s Up?’ during Linda Perry’s 2015 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, image via Getty. The song itself is about trying to feel okay in an oppressive society.

She wrote the song when she was in a room down the hall
