Vincent Ho’s music is wild and fanciful, and takes us to the limits of sonic energy, but it is also intimate and tender, for he is not afraid to reveal his truly lyrical soul. THE SHAMAN is a work that sets an atmosphere of magical stillness, with the soloist evoking unearthly sounds - wolf calls, shimmering colours, and the lightest of orchestral textures. Evelyn Glennie is the first person in history to successfully create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist, performing worldwide with the greatest conductors, orchestras, and artists. She fondly recalls having played the first percussion concerto in the history of The Proms at the Albert Hall in 1992, which paved the way for orchestras round the world to feature percussion concerti.

Recording Venue: Centennial Concert Hall, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Arctic Symphony: I. Prelude - Lamentations (Live). Vincent Ho’s music is wild and fanciful, and takes us to the limits of sonic energy, but it is also intimate and tender, for he is not afraid to reveal his truly lyrical soul. It is powerful work that merges the spiritual indigenous world with the modern classical world to create a compelling musical journey.
The Nunavut Sivuniksavut Performers. Author: Guy Rickards. Arctic Symphony (2008 10) came about in the wake of a sponsored trip to the north of Canada and is a programmatic work in five movements documenting what Ho saw, felt and experienced there: the central scherzo, ‘Aboard the Amundsen’, even depicts his time on the polar exploration ship of that name. Taped Arctic ‘environmental sounds’ and an Inuit chorus feature at the start and close, highlighting Ho’s ecological concerns, though the symphony (in truth, more a tone poem in five movements) does not have the visceral impact of the concerto.
Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Evelyn Glennie, Alexander Mickelthwate, The Shaman & Arctic Symphony. Because of the resources that go into producing orchestral recordings, stakes are especially high in this category. The 2017 Juno Award for best classical album: large ensemble or soloist(s) with large ensemble accompaniment went to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation. They're back in 2018 with a nomination for their recording of two works by Vincent Ho, The Shaman and Arctic Symphony, both written during Ho's tenure as composer in residence with the WSO, from 2007 to 2014.

The Shaman – a percussion concerto written for Dame Evelyn Glennie – will receive its world premiere on January 29, 2011 by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Glennie will also perform The Shaman with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Peter Oundjian on March 2, 2011, as part of the TSO’s New Creations Festival. Ho’s Arctic Symphony has been described as a beautifully thought-provoking way to promote the message of climate change, and acclaimed as a mature and atmospheric work that firmly establishes Ho among North American composers of note (Winnipeg Free Press). But this time, Ho wanted to unleash his inner inferno.
