Album · 2015 · 13 Songs. There's no question that Texas-based singer/guitarist Gary Clark Jr. can shred with the best of them. But on his second major-label full-length, it's his restraint that's his trump card. He gently dabs the minimalist blues-rocker "The Healing" with little more than a . King-style riff and a poker-hot vocal, keeping the song gorgeously unfussy. Just as expressive is the stomping "Grinder", which features a literally screaming guitar lick that mimics the line it follows: "My baby's crying/So now my baby's crying.

Gary Clark J. s versatility is both blessing and curse. The Austin ace’s 2012 breakthrough album, Blak and Blu, shuffle-mixed through blues roots; raw, Hendrix-channeling solos; glossy, modern R&B; and points between, but never quite figured out how to connect the dots. Three years later, his studio follow-up does - mainly by focusing on his unfuckwithable guitar. Clark carves out a Prince-ly room of his own with wah-wah-washed acid rock ( Grinder ) and ping-ponging, Bootsy-tinted funk ( Star )

The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. Gary seems like he's a bit more comfortable with his voice, and a bit more restrained with his lead licks. I think the best part of the album is the middle, but honestly, I can and have listened to the whole album on repeat for a week at a time. Here's hoping he comes around my way for a show sometime this year.
