Ice Cube’s classic sophomore album Death Certificate was released through Priority Records on October 29, 1991. The album cover sparked some controversy, showing Ice Cube standing in a morgue over a white corpse draped with the American flag and Uncle Sam on the toe tag-a visual representation of the track I Wanna Kill Sam. The state of Oregon banned retail stores from promoting the album.

Death Certificate is Ice Cube’s most important (if not his best) album, and one of the most essential works in rap history. in late 1989 over a royalty dispute, a fairly mundane conclusion to his tenure as the intellectual force and chief lyricist for the self-proclaimed World’s Most Dangerous Group after only one proper album. Cube’s lyrics for Fuck the Police had triggered an . response earlier that same year, but Cube was still living at home with his parents when Straight Outta Compton was rocketing toward platinum status. During the two years between Cube’s split in late 1989 and the release of Death Certificate, his sprawling, imperfect magnum opus in late 1991, rap music grew up in a hurry, experiencing its pop and punk moments simultaneously.

Death Certificate is the second studio album by rapper Ice Cube, released October 31, 1991 on Priority Records. The album debuted on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at and on the Billboard 200 chart at while it went on to sell over two million copies to date.

Just about the only universal reaction Death Certificate generates is one of awe at the 360-degree ferocity Ice Cube maintains for its hour duration. A singular musical statement, Death Certificate comes from a singular era, and whatever level of understanding we're permitted can only be reached through thoroughly replacing the record in its complicated context  . The album was designed for vinyl, the first half designated 'The Death Side' and the flip 'The Life Side'. In the spoken intro, Cube defines these as, respectively, "a mirrored image of where we are today" and "a vision of where we need to go".
