Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (sometimes shortened to Rhythm Nation 1814) is the fourth studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on September 19, 1989, by A&M Records. The album themes include various tragedies reported through the news at the time, exploring racism, poverty, and substance abuse. In 1990 Jackson went on her first head line tour called "Rhythm Nation Tour 1990". Since its release, the album has sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide.

Rhythm Nation was Janet’s second consecutive album to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 and would go on to be certified six times platinum in the US and sell more than 12 million copies worldwide. The album is historic in several ways, being the only one to feature seven top-five pop singles and contain three number one pop singles in three separate calendar years-"Miss You Much" (1989), Black Cat and Escapade (1990), and Love Will Never Do (Without You) (1991).

The eighties were just wrapping up and another Jackson was putting the final touches on her big decade. Her first three albums saw moderate success and put her out of her brother's shadow and into the mainstream. While it is her forte, dance pop is not the only thing being played and expressed here, "Black Cat shows a shining contrast to that.
