Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of African-American folktales adapted and compiled by Joel Chandler Harris, published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post-Reconstruction Atlanta, and produced seven Uncle Remus books. He wrote these stories to represent the struggle in the Southern United States, and more specifically in the plantations. He did so by introducing tales he had heard and framing them in the plantation context.

Uncle Remus is one of the first positive depictions of an African-American character. This movie was released in 1946. The norm back then was that black characters were mocked and ridiculed. Uncle Remus was the protagonist. The film is an adaptation of the stories of Uncle Remus by Joel Chandler Harris, written with a typical Disney frame story about a little boy and his idiot parents who eventually come realize they are idiots, largely because Uncle Remus and the boy’s white grandmother are not idiots. We see interracial friendships, inter-class friendships, and Uncle Remus tells stories which are both clever and moral lessons

Br'er Rabbit's dream, from Uncle Remus, His Songs and His Sayings: The Folk-Lore of the Old Plantation, 1881. Br'er Rabbit /ˈbrɛər/ (Brother Rabbit), also spelled Bre'r Rabbit or Brer Rabbit, is a central figure as Uncle Remus tells stories of the Southern United States. Br'er Rabbit is a trickster who succeeds by his wits rather than by brawn, provoking authority figures and bending social mores as he sees fit. The Walt Disney Company later adapted this character for its 1946 animated motion picture Song of the South.
