Founded in Leyton in London's East End in 1975, Iron Maiden released their first album in 1980 as a five-piece with Paul Di'Anno on vocals. Bruce Dickinson would replace him in 1981. With several line-up changes Steve Harris would remain the only original member never to have had a hiatus.

Like almost every band ever, Iron Maiden’s output depends heavily on their singer. But there are more than four phases to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal icons’ extensive catalog, and more subtle influences at work behind the fronts provided by singers Paul Di’Anno, Bruce Dickinson, Blaze Bayley and Dickinson again. Dickinson’s return for Brave New World seemed to signal a return to ‘80s greatness. And while that was the case in many ways, Maiden gradually but gratefully began to fully embrace the prog element that had always been there, and do so to this day. Selecting one song from each of their 16 albums as the best can be challenging because there’s almost always a certain level of quality across the writing of each LP – Maiden very much being a band that embraces the album format.
For the more initiated, Eddie represents more than just a mascot. Eddie is heavy metal. And who can blame them? So many of these pieces of art can rightfully claim ownership of the coveted top spot in our ranking because of the aura surrounding them. There's an incredible depth to Maiden artwork, offering plenty of ammunition for whichever cover you'd choose to argue as the best. Whether it was Derek Riggs.
NWOBHM legends Iron Maiden released their album Somewhere In Time on this day in 1986. It’s one of their most intricately detailed album covers and layered with many in-jokes and nods to their past. Artist Derek Riggs spent weeks on the 32-inch by 15-inch painting. It wore me out quite severely, Riggs revealed in Martin Popoff’s book Run For Cover: The Art Of Derek Riggs. They returned to play a secret show in 1988 under the name Charlotte and The Harlots. Back cover – section two. 1) Long Beach Arena is where Maiden recorded Live After Death.
