Whilst Unseen Forces at times feels rooted in the aesthetics of ambient music at times, utilizing the slow passages of drone music to marvellous effect, it draws much more out of the genre by including many different techniques. Walter has presented an album that feels incredibly enticing and intoxicating, as it draws you into such a serene world full of amazing presence, that you sometimes can’t help but allow yourself to be pulled back into it all over again.
Instead, it floats and sparkles in midair while Walter coaxes more warped tones from the EVI. This is as bright and joyous as the album gets, however, as subsequent pieces are darker and more haunted. Soft Illness" is a blast of Lawrence English-like power ambient, with thick, billowing storm clouds of fuzz and humming bass tones. Unseen Forces may seem more challenging than Walter's previous album, but it's just as captivating, and most certainly worth delving into.
The combination of the mysterious electronic valve instrument, trumpet, and piano makes a sound that creeps into your subconscious. Ambient is often associated with background music, and while the riffs and motifs of Unseen Forces pop into my head throughout the day, I hardly hear it as background filler.

New album Unseen Forces Out April 21 via kranky. The murky depths of low-range tones are like subconscious murmurs. This kind of music speaks in so much depth, more than the imaginary space that an echo brings, or atmospheres built with samples and noise. Justin Walter’s music is bassy, perplexing and intimate. There is a jarring restlessness that grapples, tosses and turns on Walter’s music, sounds caught in the nocturnal grasp between blissful reveries and palpitating terror.
