Unheard Erroll Garner recordings are a rarity, so the existence of Legacy's 2016 collection Ready Take One is remarkable in and of itself. To have it be excellent is something else, and to have it be a bit of a swinging revelation is another thing entirely. Consisting of sessions recorded in 1967, 1969, and 1971 but only recently discovered, Ready Take One finds Garner working in a trio setting sometimes augmented by a percussionist - a standard setting for him, but the difference here is that he's often swinging with a soulful touch
Legendary pianist and composer Erroll Garner stands tall among those individuals. A new addition to his brilliant manifestation of artistry and jubilant expressiveness is always a treat, but when it is at such a majestic peak as in Octave Music/Mack Avenue Records spectacular new release, Erroll Garner: Nightconcert, it is a revelation. The repertoire on this album is pure Garner, heavily drawn from the Great American Songbook with a nice infusion of originals. There are three Cole Porter classics: Easy to Love, Night and Day and What Is This Thing Called Love; and two gems from Rodgers & Hart: My Funny Valentine and Where or When. Pretty straight ahead erroll garner. He swings through a concert for over an hour and it was enjoyable. I wish erroll would throw in a few slower ballads to break things up, but if you want to listen to erroll you know what you're getting.
Erroll Garner Jazz Project. Erroll Garner performing an abbreviated version of "Misty" in Copenhagen in 1968. This performance took place one year before he recorded "Misty" in Paris, which would be released on 2016's Ready Take One album. Playing in this performance are Ike Isaacs (bass), Jimmi Smith (drums), and Jose Mangual (congas). The Ready Take One recording featured the same band aside from bass, with Larry Gales playing bass on the Paris recording.
