Redirected from Sweetheart Of The Rodeo). Sweetheart of the Rodeo is the sixth album by American rock band the Byrds and was released on August 30, 1968, on Columbia Records (see 1968 in music). Recorded with the addition of country rock pioneer Gram Parsons, it was influential as the first major country rock album by an established act and represented a stylistic move away from the psychedelic rock of the band's previous LP, The Notorious Byrd Brothers.

Sweetheart of the Rodeo is the sixth album by American rock band The Byrds and was released on August 30, 1968 on Columbia Records (see 1968 in music). Recorded with the addition of country rock pioneer Gram Parsons, it was influential as the first major country rock album by an established act and represented a stylistic move away from the psychedelic rock. of the band's previous LP, The Notorious Byrd Brothers. The Byrds had occasionally experimented with country music on their four previous albums, but Sweetheart of the Rodeo represented their fullest immersion into the genre.

The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo was not the first important country-rock album (Gram Parsons managed that feat with the International Submarine Band's debut Safe at Home), and the Byrds were hardly strangers to country music, dipping their toes in the twangy stuff as early as their second album

The Byrds, during the not-so-Great Folk-Rock controversy, attempted to qualify their own individual transition by saying: If only one line of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ (which they had just recorded) gets through to the kids it’ll have been worth it. The Byrds had all been Folkies and their subscription to Dylan’s new method of getting the message across (something Dylan himself denied trying to do) was of no little significance. What Barry McGuire, Jody Miller and the Byrds were doing was sacrilegious to the hard-core Folkies. The Yin-Yang cycle of the musical flow continues to hold true. The Byrds have made an interesting album. It’s really very uninvolved and not a difficult record to listen to. It ought to make the Easy-Listening charts.

Sweethearts of the Rodeo is the debut album from the American country music group Sweethearts of the Rodeo. Five of the tracks would rise into the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

Commercially, the Byrds weren't exactly at the top of their game in 1968. Their fifth album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, released in January, topped out at No. 47, and its only single, "Goin' Back," barely cracked the Top 90. Plus, the band's revolving door spit out cofounder David Crosby midway through the recording sessions. Not that there was anything wrong with The Notorious Byrd Brothers; it's one of the group's best works  . As recording for Sweetheart of the Rodeo began, and Parsons became a major presence and influence on the sessions, McGuinn's concept was downscaled to a country album punctuated with rock 'n' roll grace notes. Listen to the Byrds' 'You Ain't Goin' Nowhere'.
