All David Gray does is confuse me and for an artist with such a straightforward style that's pretty difficult. But it's not a good thing, because the reason David Gray confuses me is that David Gray sounds confused. Five years passed between Life In Slow Motion and last year's Draw The Line and now just a year later we've got a new collection of songs from the Manchester-born singer-songwriter. And apparently, this is the album he's always wanted to record. I'm not one for second-guessing artists but I'm calling bullshit.
Having spent four years working on last year's Draw The Line, David Gray returns in feverish haste with Foundling, which has the misfortune of sharing its title with this May's superior album by Mary Gauthier. While Gauthier's songs were hewn from experience and rendered without fuss, Gray's are so swaddled in "poetic" obfuscation it's hard to summon enough interest to decode them.
Foundling is described as the closing chapter for his previous album "Draw The Line, an. eeds to be presented in a different wa. Described as a private record, David Gray states that he has never taken the dynamics low as I have done on this record. I had to have faith in writing and understatement – the things I hold as my strengths. I’m as proud of it as anything I’ve done. Gray’s commercial expectations, however, are low: This record is going to disappear off the face of the earth, bar some freak occurrence.
Written during the same sessions that spawned 2009’s Draw the Line, Foundling is another pleasant, pastoral effort from David Gray, who seems to have settled into a contemporary folk mold after flirting with electronics during the ‘90s. Only the Wine, which kicks off this two-disc set with acoustic guitar and brushed percussion, takes its cues from Van Morrison and Nick Drake, both of whom serve as stylistic touchstones throughout the album.
