Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez, known as Diego Rivera (Spanish pronunciation: ; December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957) was a prominent Mexican painter.
Diego Rivera has been called, A bright, new voice on the saxophone whose sound emerges from the echoes of the past. In 1999, Rivera toured nationally with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra for their Big Band '99 . Rivera has also toured with internationally renowned bassist, Rodney Whitaker, former member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Rivera has performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival, Art Tatum Toledo Jazz Festival, Idlewild Jazz Festival and Lansing Jazz Festival.
A Mexican muralist painter, Diego Rivera was an outspoken member of the Mexican communist party and husband to painter Frida Kahlo. Rivera began drawing at the age of three, one year after the death of his twin brother Carlos. His father built him a studio with chalkboard and canvas on the walls to keep him from drawing on the walls and furniture. At the age of ten, he studied at the Academy of San Carlos, and at the age of 21 was sponsored by the governor of Veracruz to study art in Europe.
Diego Rivera, a memorable figure in 20th century art, actively painted during the 50 years from 1907 to 1957. Mexican by birth, Rivera spent a good portion of his adult life in Europe and the United States as well as in his home in Mexico City. Early in his career, he dabbled in Cubism and later embraced Post-Impressionism, but his unique style and perspective is immediately recognizable as his own. He was involved in the world of politics as a dedicated Marxist and joined the Mexican Communist Party in 1922.
