War Pigs" is a song by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath. It is the opening track from their 1970 album Paranoid. The original title of "War Pigs" was "Walpurgis", dealing with the witches' sabbath. Walpurgis is sort of like Christmas for Satanists. And to me, war was the big Satan", said bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler. It wasn’t about politics or government or anything.
On the 1994 Black Sabbath tribute album Nativity In Black, Faith No More contributed a live cover version. Faith No More also covered this on their 1989 album The Real Thing. War Pigs has been used as the name of various Black Sabbath tribute bands. Jim from Oxnard, CaThe song "War Pigs" is about war and destruction caused by man. "Walpurgis" was originally intended as a joke by Butler, but Ozzy was the only one who took it seriously, and even after the "Paranoid" album was recorded, Ozzy sang the "Walpurgis" version in concerts, which pissed off the other three. Apparently Ozzy liked the lyrics a lot. And the only place to get the song is in the 2002 "Ozzman Cometh" greatest hits compilation, which still lists it as "War Pigs.
This is how Black Sabbath’s second album would have looked if they’d stuck to their original intention. hen you see the ‘correct’ title of War Pigs it makes so much more sense of Marcus Keef’s front cover concept. The pink-clad-warrior idea was obviously intended to reflect the album’s original title and is probably why War Pigs was also the first track on the album. Recorded in June 1970 and released in September just a few months after their debut in February of that year, USA was still deeply ingrained in the Vietnam conflict and anti-war demonstrations were rife in America. The album went to N. in the UK albums chart, and No. 12 in the US, so thankfully the title change appeared not to affect sales in any way, although instead of being identified as anti-war protesters in the US, Sabbath instead were labelled satanists and devil worshippers due to some lyrical content on the first album.
