Reviews about I.A.M. Umbrella - Semaphore (1):
The first side opens with the medium-fast & furious track "Watermark" which is built around thick and heavy drums which scatter around in their own wonderful patterns while flute, harmonica and all manner of other sounds blend into a dense wall of Ethnic-sounding music. Although a little faster and more dense, this reminds me a lot of the sort of thing O YUKI CONJUGATE, VASILISK & MUSLIMGAUZE are putting out - tasty! "Imago Maintains Butt As Portable Camoflage" comes next through looping, folding vocal sounds. Over the top of this feedback screeches and animal howls gather into a weird melting pot of sound. On the credits, EMILY C. HAY offers vocals & processing, while RICK TAMURA adds tapes, corrugated tubing & processing - this sort of listing would sell the tape to me every time - and I wouldn't insist on my money back. This track isn't exactly relaxing, but it does have an interesting (if a little grating) textural quality which bubbles, moans, screams & throbs to it's conclusion. Side two opens with "Book Of Tea" the shortest recording on this tape, clocking in at 4'14". It swirls and hums, groans and twitters a little like whale song heard through some alien hearing aid. It seems to keep some kind of tempo while hiding any hint of 'pattern' within it's curious anti / structure. The second and last track is called "Einnungagua" and is the longest track at 9'49". It reminds me a little of something from the "MOUVEMENTS" CD - it has that epic sense of composition. It begins with seemingly random noise - Industrial noises, ambient sounding, not unlike that atmosphere EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN were capable of, although this is perhaps even more dense than their 'music'. Flute flutters across the heavy, thick sound of machinery and forever-dragging chains. Piano, weak and toyish is heard beneath the miasma tinkling now and again in a loose imitation of tempo. This carries on until it finally fades away. I'll be interested to see what they can come up with in future - while their music all seems random, there's a certain amount of structure to it, albeit well-disguised and taking someone like LYALL WATSON to fully suss it out. This tape has some interesting textures and never seems to overstay it's welcome - not bad considering 3 out of 4 are over seven minutes long! Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
