Although most of the compositions on saxophonist Nathan Haines’ eighth album are self penned, the influence of John Coltrane seems all-pervasive. Even the titles resonate with the legendary saxophonist’s late-flowering spirituality – Realisation, Consequences and the lovely Offering, written by pianist Kevin Field, are ringers for Coltrane’s Impulse catalogue. Haines has more focus and fire than most who follow the modal path – the New Zealander has a backstory in London’s rave scene – and the album is full of muscular playing and emotional bite.
