Not surprisingly, the music on Reflections sounds pretty much like the Charles Lloyd Quartet minus Mr. Lloyd-and that's still pretty darn good. Deeply lyrical, this is music with soul and feeling, but not a hint of sentimentality. Nothing seems to be played for mere effect, and every note seems to flow from the next, but never predictably.

Bobo Stenson is best known for his longtime association with Charles Lloyd. On his trio set (which has fine support from bassist Anders Jormin and drummer Jon Christensen), he often sounds a bit like Keith Jarrett, Lloyd's pianist of the 1960s. Stenson shows more energy than one might expect to hear on an ECM date, although he also has several introspective explorations.
