Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue Vol. II mp3 album

Mermaid Avenue is a 1998 album of previously unheard lyrics written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie, put to music written and performed by British singer Billy Bragg and the American band Wilco. The project was the first of several such projects organized by Guthrie's daughter, Nora Guthrie, original director of the Woody Guthrie Foundation and archives. Mermaid Avenue was released on the Elektra Records label on June 23, 1998

Like many sequels, Mermaid Avenue, Vol. 2 isn't the equal of its predecessor - that felt fully realized, where this feels a little patchwork - yet it is still satisfying on many levels. As on the first, the Billy Bragg-written and sung music is the most convincing since he captures the cadences and spirit of Guthrie's music. They sound like classic, weathered folk songs whereas Wilco's numbers are modern inventions, splicing music that is clearly theirs with Guthrie's words. The chasm between the two artists was apparent on the first, but it's more evident this time.

Between the two of them, Billy Bragg and Wilco had twelve songs left over from the Mermaid Avenue sessions. So now, in 2000, they've decided to issue a second volume, only three songs of which were recorded since the original sessions. Perhaps this explains why the sound isn't much different this time around, and why the songs aren't on par with the previous album. Volume II is like an unnecessary b-sides compilation, and for the most part, there's a reason why these songs didn't make the cut the first time around. In some cases, the songs on Volume II are the embarrassing cousins of songs from the first album. As an album opener, "Airline to Heaven" gets the foot stomping just as well as "Walt Whitman's Niece", but you can't sing along to it. And in the battle of songs about cultural icons, the plodding "Joe DiMaggio Done It Again" makes "Ingrid Bergman" seem much more pleasant than it really is.

Reviews about Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue Vol. II (4):

THIS is the way every 180g reissue should be done. Clean, heavy vinyl, lined inner sleeves, gorgeous tip-on outer sleeves, and separate lyric sheet. Lacquers and mastering by the great Bernie Grundman is of course the most important part, and they don't disappoint. Highly recommended release.

This is listed as a reissue, but there are no other LPs listed....

it wasn't issued on vinyl initially. this is the first LP ... of the second MA collection
Vudogal
That's because the original version was released 13 years prior to the vinyl release. So, technically, this is the first vinyl issue. But, also a reissue of the original album.
