The Symphony No. 2 in E minor and C major by Arnold Bax was completed in 1926, after he had worked on it for two years. It was dedicated to Serge Koussevitzky, who conducted the first two performances of the work on 13 and 14 December 1929. The opening movement is noted for its complex orchestration. The entire thematic material for the whole symphony is laid out in the Molto moderato introduction of the first movement. The Allegro moderato section which follows is a further development of the introductory material, as is the more lyrical second subject. The movement ends with the sonorous theme which was first stated by the lower woodwinds at the beginning of the symphony. Myer Fredman conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

The opening measures of Bax Symphony No. 2 are reminiscent of the musival introductions encountered in Hitchcock's melodramatic films. The haunting orchestral sounds interspersed with tympani and brass outbreaks eventually yields to pleasing melody but still in a restrained vein. Sweeping paragraphs, reminiscent of Sibelius, are also heard. which fimalise in energetic rhythmic phases.
Composer Sir Arnold Bax. Orchestra London Philharmonic. Conductor Myer Fredman. Conductor Raymond Leppard. Producer David Harvey. Engineer Kenneth Wilkinson. Venue October 1970 Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London. Engineer Stanley Goodall. Genre: Orchestral & Concertos. Sir arnold bax. Symphony N. 1. 1st Movement: Molto moderato-Allegro moderato.
By coupling a 1971 recording of the First conducted by Myer Fredman and a 1975 recording of the Seventh conducted by Raymond Leppard, those new to Bax can hear the wildly passionate First and the almost serene Seventh in deeply dedicated interpretations. Both Fredman and Leppard ably articulate Bax's organically episodic forms and clearly express the emotional cogency that binds them together. With the more than professional playing of the London Philharmonic and the amazingly realistic sound of Lyrita's stereo recording, this disc will surely win Bax more admirers among aficionados.
