The Phil Woods Quartet - At The Vanguard mp3 album
Sound Of The Vanguard. Written-By – Phil Woods. The Phil Woods Quartet. At The Vanguard (LP, Album).
Philip Wells Woods (November 2, 1931 – September 29, 2015) was an American jazz alto saxophonist, clarinetist, bandleader, and composer. Woods was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. He studied music with Lennie Tristano, who influenced him greatly, at the Manhattan School of Music and at the Juilliard School. His friend, Joe Lopes, coached him on clarinet as there was no saxophone major at Juilliard at the time.
Recorded the day after a similar album (Live From New York) was cut for Palo Alto, this fine effort by the Phil Woods Quartet (with pianist Hal Galper, bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin) features the great altoist performing his usual mix of superior and generally less-played standards, ballads and obscurities (including Red Mitchell's "It's Time to Emulate the. Japanese"), along with his original "Reet's Neet. The music is straight-ahead and boppish, but not overly predictable.
