LoneLady - Nerve Up mp3 album

Nerve Up (2010) was recorded in a crumbling room of a mill in Miles Platting, a run-down area of East Manchester, co-produced by Campbell and Guy Fixsen (Laika, My Bloody Valentine). The room was purpose built using breeze-blocks and salvaged scrap For her live shows, Campbell arranges parts and shows her musicians what to play  .

Nerve Up is the debut album by Lonelady, released by Warp on 22 February 2010. In an interview for Pop Matters with Guy Mankowski Julie Campbell stated that she wanted the album to "crackle with energy and clarity, and retain the intimacy of a home-recorded aesthetic". She elaborated on her artistic process, saying "some of those songs first existed as four-track home recordings; I was using minimal means and this informed the aesthetic.

Nerve Up is primarily the creation of singer/guitarist Julie Campbell, a native of Manchester who shows an uncanny ability to reinvigorate a sound that was seemingly beyond saving. When she slashes a pick across her guitar strings, there's no way to avoid using a word like "sharp" and "angular" in describing what emerges, and the way she sings- agitated, clipped, in terse fragments- perfectly complements those sounds. The combination of these elements gives the album a nervous, contagious energy that's evident the moment "If Not Now" starts, with Campbell furiously cycling through a two-note pattern on her guitar. Most of the songs on Nerve Up follow the same template- guitar chords are fired off, cryptic phrases are aired out ("sun threaten the horizon like a black sign"; "said a ghost is more solid than that"), and the drum machine hits it marks.

LoneLady - Nerve Up (Image courtesy of Warp Records). has long been fertile ground for musical innovation. LoneLady (real name Julie Campbell) is one of the city's latest musical exports. Her songs-with all instruments played by Campbell herself-are smart and catchy, and while it's too early to tell if she's Manchester's next great hope, her claustrophobic DIY pop marks her as an artist to watch.

Intuition" has a grander feel to it, thanks to the horns, while the title track shows off some stripped-down funk. The layers on "Marble" help the track fade to white better, and "Cattletears" and "Have No Past" are more typical singer-songwriter tracks. Fear No More" stays sparse as the album fades away.
