This young group of musicians really met the challenge of playing some difficult music, and I had such a great time recording the CD with them, Mainieri said. The MU Concert Jazz Band is the flagship ensemble of the Jazz Studies Program, housed in the MU School of Music. The band has also performed with nationally acclaimed jazz artists such as Maria Schneider, Rufus Reid, Bob Mintzer, Terell Stafford, John Fedchock and others. The Marching Band, Varsity Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and University Bands give numerous performances at every level, from UW–Madison athletic events to professional music conferences and tours. Auditions are required for some but not all ensembles. The concert ensembles regularly perform repertoire ranging from classical, standard band literature to giving the premieres of contemporary works for the medium. The rich, musical heritage of the concert ensembles includes faculty conductors Raymond Dvorak, H. Robert Reynolds, Eugene Corporon, James Smith, and Mike Leckrone.
A concert band, also called wind ensemble, symphonic band, wind symphony, wind orchestra, wind band, symphonic winds, symphony band, or symphonic wind ensemble, is a performing ensemble consisting of members of the woodwind, brass, and percussion families of instruments, and occasionally including the double bass or bass guitar.

In the University of Wisconsin Marching Band's "Fifth Quarter", the band marches onto the field, and facing the winning team's stands, plays that team's school song. They then turn, face the other side, and play that team's school song. Thousands of spectators remain in the stands for 15 minutes after the game for the Fifth Quarter performance. It became popular among Wisconsin fans when the band traveled to Boston for the 1973 NCAA men's hockey championship, where the song was played at games, on the street, and in hotel lobbies. When performed by the Wisconsin band, the advertising line at the end of the original beer ad is replaced by the line "When You Say WIS-CON-SIN, You've Said It All!". At the end of the Fifth Quarter, the band lines up once more to play "Varsity", while the spectators sing.
