Quadrophenia was originally released as a double album by Track Records in November 1973 (Track 2657 013). Released to coincide with The Who’s first UK and US tours for two years, it reached in both countries’ album charts. The first CD version (Polydor 831 072-2) was released in the early 1980s, followed by a remastered double CD in 1996 (Polydor 531 971-2)
Pete Townshend revisited the rock opera concept with another double-album opus, this time built around the story of a young mod's struggle to come of age in the mid-'60s. If anything, this was a more ambitious project than Tommy, given added weight by the fact that the Who weren't devising some fantasy but were re-examining the roots of their own birth in mod culture

The Who have been with several labels over the years. In the United Kingdom and elsewhere outside North America, they were signed originally to Brunswick Records. In 1966, they moved to Polydor Records and took the rights to their Brunswick recordings with them. They created and moved to Track Records the following year with distribution by Polydor. They left Track in 1974 and returned to Polydor directly, remaining with the label ever since. In North America, they were originally on Decca Records. Quadrophenia Soundtrack. Nearly 40 years after its original release, Pete Townshend has sat down with The Who's second rock opera Quadrophenia to give it a polish. The full results come in the Director's Cut - the album spread over two CDs, another two discs of demos, plus . (quadrophonic) DVD audio of the standouts.
Quadrophenia is the only Who album entirely composed by Pete Townshend. The group started work on the album in 1972, trying to follow up Tommy and Who's Next, both of which had achieved substantial critical and commercial success. Recording was delayed while bassist John Entwistle and singer Roger Daltrey recorded solo albums and drummer Keith Moon worked on films. Because a new studio was not finished in time, the group had to use Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio Quadrophenia was released to a positive reception in both the UK and the US, but the resulting tour was marred with problems with backing tapes replacing the additional instruments on the album, and the stage piece was retired in early 1974. It was revived in 1996 with a larger ensemble, and a further tour took place in 2012.
